BLACK POLITICAL EMPOWERMENT

Barbara Becnel is one of the best known Black women in the Green Party. She switched to the Green Party after running for Governor of California as a Democrat. Ms. Becnel will speak at a 7:00 pm program on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 sponsored by the Universal African Peoples Organization and Green Party of St. Louis. She will discuss:

" Black political empowerment
" Race and the judicial system
" The Tookie Williams case

Barbara Becnel co-produced the award-winning film Redemption: The Stan "Tookie" Williams Story, based on her partnership with Tookie Williams. Jamie Foxx starred at Mr. Williams and Lynn Whitfield portrayed Ms. Becnel. The movie was honored at the Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival in France. For 13 years she worked with death row prisoner and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Tookie Williams. She edited and published his award-winning se-ries of books for at-risk children.

As an advocate and friend, she organized an international campaign for clemency until he was killed by the State of California on December 13, 2005. She witnessed his execution.

Donna Jones will give an update on resistance to efforts to destroy the St. Louis Public Schools.

The Green Party of St. Louis has endorsed the candidacies of Katie Wessling and David Jackson for St. Louis Board of Education and will be celebrating their victories in the April 3 elections.
