2 Articles: Critiques and Alternative Approaches to Community Development

Two articles attached; the first quotes from the second. Both articles offer criticism of the neoliberal approach to community development, pointing out socioeconomic disparity which results, and propose alternatives.

A Proposal: Caucus of the Militant Grammarians

Does the ongoing abuse of the English language give you the howling Fantods? Do you cringe at every split infinitive, dangling participle, or ignorance of subjunctive which your red pen must strike out? Do you ponder whether this century will see the end of the rich linguistic heritage that brought us Beowulf, Shakespeare, and Milton? Do you actively prepare for the horrifying day when USA Today prints its daily news in speech bubbles?

Upcoming small building projects?

New Backdoor
Since the backdoor keeps getting jimmied, is it finally time to replace that door, preferably with a metal-clad one? The current door is pretty thoroughly beat up, and a new door would already have holes drilled for a deadbolt. Any ideas on cost of new door from Hoods or ever Re-Store? Would we need a new door frame?

Subject: Cherokee Pathways: Youth photo project -- Know any kids to recommend?

Hi neighbors!

I'm working with Mel Watkins from UMSL Public Policy to facilitate a
free photography class for 10-15 youth aged 14+ at CAMP, to be held
for two months on Saturdays beginning April 26th. I am excited to
amass a crew that represents as best as possible all the gorgeous
pockets of people here. So far I'm connecting to kids I've met on the
street, thru Cherokee Rec, and the Roosevelt after school. Who else?

Policy for giving out keys

Since we hope to open up the 1st floor space to folks who may
not be on 1st-name basis with CAMPers (like Jim Hamilton's Intro 2
Socialism group), Don suggests a policy for giving out keys. In
particular...

A. Keep a list of who has which key to 1st floor space.

B. Any group hosting an event should sign the events contract.

C. Also, any group who gets a key should know stuff like...
- Where fire exits & extinguishers are located.
- Where the 1st aid kit resides.
- How to clean up, and where cleaning supplies reside.
- How to lock up.

CAMP Winterization, Nov 2007

This was posted to forum to assist future CAMPers with winterizing the building.

Freezing nights are upon us!!! I ignited the remaining furnaces on the
2nd floor to avoid cold fingers and freezing pipes, and also fixed some
poorly mounted thermostats in 1st floor.

Suggest actions, starting this weekend:

For each section of the building (ordered by priority)...

1. 2nd floor apartment
2. 1st floor (lots of windows!)
3. 3026 2nd floor offices
4. 3rd floor

Do the following...

A. Fill gaps in window sills and/or storm window frames with spray-foam.
