Policy for giving out keys

Since we hope to open up the 1st floor space to folks who may
not be on 1st-name basis with CAMPers (like Jim Hamilton's Intro 2
Socialism group), Don suggests a policy for giving out keys. In
particular...

A. Keep a list of who has which key to 1st floor space.

B. Any group hosting an event should sign the events contract.

C. Also, any group who gets a key should know stuff like...
- Where fire exits & extinguishers are located.
- Where the 1st aid kit resides.
- How to clean up, and where cleaning supplies reside.
- How to lock up.

Perhaps we could also set up a mailslot on one of the exterior doors
where folks can return their key after they're done with it.

Card Access?

Suggestion from Peter:

The lost key situation is a problem for a lot of places especially
where a number of people will need to have access. It might be beyond
the means of camp right now but maybe a long term plan would be to
implement card access. That way if one of the cards gets lost/stolen
then it can be deactivated and a new card can be immediately issued.
Again, doesn't help right now & I have no idea how much that would
cost but like all tech stuff will probably become cheaper with time

Card access for CAMP would

Card access for CAMP would be quite surreal, and I'm sure not there's really going to be much of a problem with wanting to lock out specific individuals. It kinda runs against the general spirit of CAMP.

Also, don't card access systems require a constant power source? Wouldn't there have to be battery backup of some sort just to work the doors in case of power outage (a genuine concern in this neighborhood)?

Peter: I guess I don't see

Peter: I guess I don't see much of a difference between cards and keys(beyond the price). I think many locks rely on batteries alone. Another option that could make a lost key problem less of a pain would be a key pad lock. But there's an issue of people giving out the combination. -You know a key or a card has gone missing because they're physical objects.

If we did use card lock for anything it would probably give us the most bang if we used one card lock for the door that the highest number of people will need to use. So, people that just need access to set up an event could get a single card. If the card gets lost it could be disabled.
The locks are expensive- $200 not including installation.

And an added benefit would be if for some reason we had to give out 20 keys that would only be active for a month.
I know someone that set one up that does authentication via a pc(and a radio connection?). No idea if that was a custom/homemade deal.
