CAMP Winterization, Nov 2007

This was posted to forum to assist future CAMPers with winterizing the building.

Freezing nights are upon us!!! I ignited the remaining furnaces on the
2nd floor to avoid cold fingers and freezing pipes, and also fixed some
poorly mounted thermostats in 1st floor.

Suggest actions, starting this weekend:

For each section of the building (ordered by priority)...

1. 2nd floor apartment
2. 1st floor (lots of windows!)
3. 3026 2nd floor offices
4. 3rd floor

Do the following...

A. Fill gaps in window sills and/or storm window frames with spray-foam.
(Use gloves with this stuff!) I think there is one can of spray foam in
the basement, and I have 1/2 can to bring over.

B. Locate the storm windows we do have and hang them. These guys are
scattered all over the building (basements, 2nd floor, 3rd floor), so
you're best off measuring the space in the metal frame and then trying
to find a right-sized storm window. Tape measure is in the tool bag in
3024 basement.

C. Tape over any gaps between storm window pane and frame. There is a
roll of clear packing tape in the 3024 basement; we'll probably need
another soon.

D. Cover windows w/o storm windows with plastic sheet. There are boxes
of sheeting in the 3024 basement, almost certainly enough for the 2nd
floor apartment. We'll need more for 3026 2nd floor, 1st floor, and 3rd
floor.

Also, here's the gas service/billing situation for the building for October:

3022 1st floor: **gas service shut off!! need to turn on**
3022 2nd floor: $44.47
3024 1st floor: $16.15
3024 2nd floor: $39.71
3026 1st floor: $22.29
3026 2nd floor: $22.06

With more furnaces on, these bills will multiply, hence the need to get
the windows sealed.
