Planning Meeting for 12-14 Show @ Contemporary
I'd like to extend an invitation to any of you who would like to partipate in an amazing holiday event at the Contemporary Art Mueseum this year. We can do this as KFC, individuals or both.
Went to the meeting this week. It was pretty rad and now I'm really excited about this. Found out it's more of a collaborative project. Each group has slots allotted to them but is encouraged and invited to participate throughout the show. The theme is "may these changes make us light"-should be interpreted in some way in each performance. Kind of an all humans are connected, alternative holiday spirit kind of thing without being political or religious.
Show: 14th of Dec. Friday at the Contemporary Art Mueseum.
Meeting: Wed, occasionally Tues - so that myself and other (possibly) KFC members can attend
Where: CAMP (community artist media project) on Cherokee St
Notes On Last Meeting: low-key, just a few people this time- aparently last meeting was full of sexy burlesque ladies. We sat around and did lots of brainstorming, sang, danced like airplanes, and did some yoga. We are doing a short improvish performance in front of the Contemporary on the 29th of Sept (the main thing discussed). This group is made up of some incredible and diverse people/performers from throughout STL, all are amazing at what they do. Which is why I would love for you guys to participate. This is definitely more of an instance when fashion and art meet. It's not about making money or promoting, it's about creating and participating in something bigger than all of us.
Participating Groups (so far):
The Yuletide Express - the holiday choir (20 or so singers and musicians)
Acro Yoga troupe
Amazonia Belly Dancing troupe
Gravity Plays Favorites
FIREDOG
VJ Evil Che
Emily Hemeyer on costuming and vocals
Robert Van Dillon on hair and the works
Lyndsay Scott, Sarah Paulsen, Kelsey La Point on vision and the works
Possibility of having some work displayed at Contemporary after performance. Don't know details yet.
Ideas and components discussed at meeting- giant inflatable bubble with video projections, fire dancers, pole dancers, street performers, chanting, movement of light as the theme throughout... from cavemen to beings, constructed megaphones, gas masks, candles lighting throughout room, clothing that shows transition/movement. Most peices void in color/uniform. Certain characters warring exuberant clothing. Michael I thought of you during much of the brainstorming... the masks/shields, etc. Leslie I thought of your goddess costume and/or we could do a show/performance. Whatever you guys feel like contributing that goes with the theme.
If you're interested let me know. Its important to attend a meeting soon while everything is still being developed.
MY HOLIDAY SENTIMENTS: An attempt at convincing you guys that this is going to be an amazing event to be a part of.
why I'm personally participating and really excited about the project....
What I love most about the holiday season is the magic of lights, christmas trees, dreams of a fat loving man selflessly bringing gifts on a sleigh with deer and short people. The idea of people from far away getting together to share meals. People all around the world sharing in something collectively but in really different ways. Traditions. People sharing with other people who have less out of kindness not obligation.
However, the aspects of the holidays I don't like is usually what I focus on.. greed, apathy, hypocrisy, differences overweighing commonalties, people attempting to out do each other, consumerism at it's height, people fighting lines for some stupid gift that will be forgotten in a month, family members with grudges, people gorging on food. etc.
This last year I sang in Celia's Yuletide express- 20+ choir. We sing holiday carols at bars most of us never go to. It's a mix of old songs and contemporary. The big hit was John Lennon's "war is over". People in the choir can't always sing well but we all dress in crazy red/green outfits, dance, get crazy, some of us drink a little and have lots of FUN. It's the most fun I've ever had over the holidays and truly helped me transcend all the negative things I think about people/holidays/the world. Events like this and KFC Venus Envy are why I'm back in St Louis. I love the selflessness, non-pretentiousness and vast creativity that many artists/musicians/designers in this town bring to the events and things they do.
