Webster University Film Series Presents Benardo Bertolucci: The Conformist February 6 at 7PM The Conformist (Il Conformista) (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1970, Italy, 120 min.) Bertolucci's Masterpiece about sex and politics opens in 1938 in Rome, where Marcello (Jean-Louis Trintignant) has just taken a job working for Mussollini and is courting a beautiful young woman who will make him even more of a conformist. Marcello is going to Paris on his honeymoon and his bosses have an assignment for him there. Look up an old professor who fled Italy when the fascists came into power. At the border of Italy and France, where Marcello and his bride have to change trains, his bosses give him a gun with a silencer. In a flashback to 1917, we learn why sex and violence are linked in Marcello's mind. In Italian with English subtitles.

As the devastation from global warming becomes worse every year, corporate American continues to fight for Iraq's oil. But does the US really have to plunder oil so that the planet can be poisoned and fried? Or can we enjoy a better quality of life by converting the war economy to organic agriculture, ecological housing, mass transportation and worker-managed industry? How do we make this change happen?

portrayals of the Kennedy and Oswald assassinations, we'll screen three
short films by Andy Warhol and his effective use of film: Kiss, (1963,

Films begin at 5, but stop in anytime after. I've heard the first is 54
minutes of kissing.

Screening Chomsky's "Ground Truth" @ Schlafly's Tap Room

Kicking Away the Ladder: Corporate Economics Vs. Democracy
In this talk Chomsky focuses on the problems of democracy development. He discusses the so-called grand economy, as touted by Milton Friedman and others, which Chomsky describes as a great failure for the majority of the population.

Chomsky also details the history of the US trajectory, after WWII, towards becoming the most powerful state in history using military and economic policies that were anything but democratic. He looks in particular at the history of the US domination of Latin America, as well as at recent Latin American challenges to US neoliberal policies. He closes by encouraging solidarity work across the hemispheres to help build a global justice movement.

SHANGRI-LA TUESDAY NIGHT TRIVIA

Put together a team of four, throw five bucks into the
hat, answer twenty-five weird, wild, possibly obscure
questions and you may feel the ultimate rush of
triumphant victory! The winning team will receive
half the winnings and a special gift --you will never
believe what it is! The other half of the winnings
will go to organizers so they can buy the fabulously
strange mystery prize that will be awarded the
following week. The minutia begins at 8:00 p.m. every
Tuesday night beginning February 20th.

Possible topics of discussion:

- How/whether to merge STLIMC and Confluence editorial groups?

- How/whether to share featured content (i.e. some way besides current
casual arrangement)

- In general, how could STLIMC help Confluence, and vice versa? STLIMC,
in particular, has pretty flaccid participation on its own, yet it still
